What is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, is the non-surgical removal of dental plaque and calculus. This procedure is recommended as a treatment for patients who have been diagnosed with gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. At this level, the disease can be reversed with regular dental therapy and aggressive, in-home care.
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can be identified by symptoms of bad breath and/or bleeding gums. These symptoms should be analyzed immediately. The location of the disease allows it direct access to the blood stream (bleeding gums) and has been associated with serious health issues such as heart attack, stroke and premature birth. In many cases, gum disease is virtually painless and/or symptomless, becoming very dangerous for those who do not receive regular dental exams
Scaling and Root Planing Overview
Upon arrival to the Las Vegas dental care office of Dr. Frank P. Bruno, your mouth will be prepared and you will receive an anesthetic. (In some cases, sedation is recommended.) Typical hand tools will be used in the procedure because Dr. Bruno will need to clean below the gums. Also, an ultrasonic tool is used to remove built up calculus and tarter. The ultimate goal of this procedure is for the gums to eventually reattach to the teeth.
Preventive Dentistry – After the Procedure
Once the procedure is completed, the success and continued ability to ward off periodontal disease depends on two factors: regular dentist visits (at least twice per year) and aggressive in-home care by the patient.
