Immediate load dental implants, also known as provisional fixed dentures, have revolutionized the permanent replacement of teeth. In most cases, the teeth being replaced cannot be saved with dental crowns (because of extreme decay), or have been traumatically extracted or damaged.

Procedure for Replacing Missing Teeth and/or Extraction and Replacement

Phase One:

The mouth is prepared and the area is completely numbed with a local anesthetic. Unless the procedure is being performed for previously missing teeth, the teeth being operated on are removed.

Phase Two:

The extraction site is reshaped to make a channel for the implant. Then, the dental implant is drilled into the alveolar bone (bone that contains tooth sockets). Afterwards, a temporary abutment is put in place and then a temporary acrylic crown is cemented into place or bonded to the adjacent teeth, acting as a bandage for the healing implant area. The temporary is then bite-tested and adjusted as needed. It will be required to be in place for up to six months, until the permanent dental crown can be placed. It is important that the bone is given proper time to heal around the implant. (A soft food diet is recommended so that the temporary is not used for chewing.)

Phase Three:
